BBC Sports Personality Awards Gets New Look for 2007
This year’s BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year 2007 awards took on a whole new creative look and feel as a large-scale event. The show was housed entirely in Hall Five at Birmingham’s NEC. An audience of sporting celebrities and a host of sports industry guests alongside 5,000 members of the public watched sporting hero’s such as Lewis Hamilton and Ricky Hatton appear in the show.
Working closely with the BBC team, Imagination’s newly formed ‘Sports and Entertainment’ team created a visually stimulating events space - which was enjoyed by both the live audience as well as members of the public, watching at home on TV.
Sally Crabb, head of Imagination’s Sports and Entertainment department, creatively led the project to design the ceremony’s look and feel - which this year incorporated a space big enough to seat a forty piece orchestra complete with singers, as well as an under lit LED dance floor for a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ sequence and multiple interview staging areas.
The space was used not only for the show but also for a pre-show dinner for 800 corporate guests and pre-show drinks for 800 sports stars and celebrities. The area was then transformed into an after show party for 2000 guests.
Paul Davies, BBC Executive producer added:
“The creativity brought to the production by Imagination has enabled us to create a stunning visual presentation which has acted as a sensational backdrop to the biggest sports awards show of the year.”
