The Allianz Arena, designed by Herzog and de Meuron, certainly isn't your average sports stadium.
Its smooth, translucent outer façade, consisting of 2,874 air cushions, is a canvas onto which dramatic waves of light and color can be projected, lending the building a magical quality.
Munich's two leading football teams Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 are both justified in calling it home as the façade is illuminated in either blue and white or vivid red, depending on who is playing at the time.
Startlingly innovative design and sophisticated lighting technology make this a building that raises the bar for stadium design. intimates something of the potential football stadia.
As a result, the commission to design a private VIP lounge within the Arena provided Virgile and Stone with the opportunity to create a 21st century definition of the VIP box.
A 200 square metre space was to be used for a variety of different purposes beyond watching games, including formal and informal dining as well as receptions, meetings, conferences, presentations and relaxation.
The design devised by Virgile and Stone supports a variety of spatial configurations and seating plans. Minimal, clean lines, high quality finishes such as marble floors and custom designed sofas and tables combine to express exclusivity, comfort and premium quality, whatever the actual event.
The notion of ‘playing with light' that underpins the entire building is explored through the use of a lightweight fabric membrane ceiling in high gloss white. This enhances the impact of the space through a dramatic reflective effect complemented by the double height ceiling.
